Using KeePass password manager
Step 1: Verify KeePass is installed and open the program
To get started, verify that KeePass is installed by doing a search using the Windows search box in the bottom left corner. If not installed, please send a request to IT.
Assuming KeePass is installed, please open the program and proceed to the next step.
Step 2: Create a New Password Database
Upon opening KeePass, you'll need to create a new password database, which will serve as your encrypted vault for storing all your passwords. Choose a strong master password for this database, as it will be the key to unlocking all your other passwords. Make sure to create a master password that is unique and complex, using a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.
Step 3: Add a New Entry
To save passwords in KeePass, you'll need to add a new entry for each account or service you wish to store. Click on the "New Entry" button (often represented by a green plus sign) and fill in the necessary details. Provide a descriptive title for the entry, such as the website or service name.
Step 4: Generate a Strong Password
In the password generation section, click on the key icon to generate a strong, random password. KeePass allows you to customize the password's length and complexity according to your preferences. Aim for passwords that are at least 12-16 characters long, comprising a mix of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and special symbols.
Step 5: Save the Entry
Once you have generated the password, click "OK" to save the new entry in your KeePass database. The program will automatically encrypt and store the information, ensuring it remains secure and inaccessible to unauthorized individuals.
Step 6: Organize and Categorize Entries
As you save more passwords, it's essential to organize and categorize them for easy retrieval. You can create groups to group similar entries, such as social media, email accounts, or online banking. Organizing your entries will help you locate specific passwords quickly.
Step 7: Use Auto-Type to Fill Passwords
KeePass offers a convenient "Auto-Type" feature that allows you to automatically fill in login credentials for websites and applications. To use Auto-Type, select the entry you wish to fill and press "Ctrl + Alt + A" or click the "Auto-Type" button. KeePass will automatically input the username and password for you, helping you avoid keyloggers and other potential risks.
